Transportation agency to launch pilot program to test self-driving car technology

Transport for America, the leading transport and logistics lobbying group, will launch a pilot program in Los Angeles that could eventually allow self-drive cars to be driven on city streets.

The agency said it will provide grants to companies that can demonstrate they can deploy a self-propelled vehicle in the city in the coming months.

The program will use the funds to pay for a fleet of fully autonomous vehicles that will be able to operate in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, which has one of the highest vehicle counts in the country.

The pilot program will start next month, and transportation officials expect to have fully autonomous cars on the road in 2021.
