While we may not see it on the roads anytime soon, the development of a robot that can drive itself is an exciting prospect.
And in a way, the concept could also be the foundation for something much larger.
A new generation of robots, based on neural networks and other techniques, are being developed by a team led by Oxford University in the US.
Their project is the brainchild of Oxford Robotics, which is a joint venture between the university and Google.
It’s the brainchildren of an Oxford Robotics student, Andrew Smith, who is now at Google’s Silicon Valley headquarters, working with Google’s engineers and AI researchers to make the robots capable of driving themselves.
Smith says the aim is to create a robot capable of running autonomously without human assistance.
Smith says this will enable robots to drive themselves without needing human help, and be a key part of a growing market of automated driving services.
“The main objective is to make these robots able to drive on their own and then be able to do all sorts of things with their hands, without any human intervention,” he says.
“For example, to get around town in a vehicle, to operate doors, to take photos and make phone calls.
Or just to navigate the world.”
The robots’ development has also been funded by the UK government.
The project has been described as a way to get beyond our cars and into a world where humans are replaced by machines, in which machines can make decisions about where to go.
And it will be interesting to see how well it succeeds.
The new robots have a similar design to the current crop of robots that have been designed by other companies such as Amazon’s Alexa, but instead of having a steering wheel and pedals, they’re connected to a controller via a wireless module.
This system is able to detect the location of a person in the vicinity, and automatically turn the robot to that spot.
The team behind the new robot, which has been developed by Oxford Robotics and a US firm called Hyperion, is still working on a full version of the system, which they hope will be ready in 2020.
But the technology is far from ready for public use, as the new project has yet to demonstrate how the robot will operate without a human in the loop.
“There is still a long way to go, and I’m sure there are lots of areas that we haven’t fully worked out,” says Smith.
“But it’s a huge step forward in the technology landscape.”
How to make your own robotIn the meantime, the project is already attracting attention in other areas.
It is also proving to be a major breakthrough for researchers, who are using it to explore how robots learn.
Researchers at the University of Oxford have demonstrated that the new system can automatically learn how to drive itself.
And now it is being explored by a handful of universities in the UK.
The researchers, led by Professor David Smith, are currently using the system to explore whether it is possible to make robotic cars that can learn from each other, and adapt their behaviour to suit human needs.
“We’re looking at the problem of how do you design an autonomous vehicle that can recognise a human and then adapt to their needs?” says Smith, a robotics expert at the university.
“We’ve taken the first step in that direction.”
The team is also looking at how to use this technology to build a robot vehicle that learns from other robots in a similar fashion to a human.
One idea is that the robot could learn to drive autonomously using a combination of the existing learning algorithms developed by Google and other companies.
That way, it could use its own internal systems to learn from its surroundings, and then respond appropriately.
In this way, a robot car could potentially be able learn to recognise a particular spot, or to move to another location if its environment is less safe.
This technology is already being used by Google to train cars in autonomous driving, and has been used to build self-driving cars for taxis.
It also allows for a robot to learn by observing what is happening around it, rather than relying on a human to drive.
Smith and his colleagues are now developing their own systems for autonomous driving.
“It’s a lot like a human driving a car.
You have to take it into account.
You need to be aware of the environment around you, you need to know how fast you’re going, you have to know where to be, what you can see and hear, how you can react to things and make decisions,” says David Smith.
“That is really the only difference between humans and robots.”
